Since 2009, the Best Western Premier Castanea Resort Hotel in Lüneburg-Adendorf has been making a very special contribution to the environment. The hotel's own combined heat and power plant (CHP) reutilises the primary energy used by the hotel. The new ‘Buderus Loganova’ is a combined heat and power solution with an electrical output of 50 kW and a thermal output of 80 kW. It supplies the hotel rooms, the swimming pool and the wellness area with heat and provides the hotel with hot water. The CHP utilises the principle of combined heat and power generation: by coupling electricity and heat generation in the unit, overall efficiencies of up to 95% (electrical + thermal) are achieved. As a result, energy savings are possible compared to power station or boiler solutions. 

The Golf Resort in Adendorf was the 18th golf club in Germany to be awarded the ‘Golf and Nature’ gold medal by the German Golf Association (DGV). The aim of the DGV's environmental concept is to take greater account of environmental factors on the golf course in order to promote this sustainable success factor for optimised play. The main focus is on the high standard of maintenance of the golf courses in order to remain attractive for guest players. Participation in the DGV environmental concept ‘Golf and Nature’ provides Castanea Resort with long-term, professional guidance on how to optimise internal work processes and develop environmental and maintenance management in a more transparent and sustainable way.

The maintenance of the various playing and care areas was optimised on the basis of a detailed maintenance plan from an environmental, golfing and business perspective. The result: the quality of play at Castanea Resort has improved and continues to improve.

The catalogue of measures also included

• the installation of a photovoltaic system at the depot and the recording of energy data
• the creation of a safety concept for the fire brigade and hospital
• Establishing contact with the Lüneburg district group of the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) with the aim of surveying the fauna and flora.

The ‘Golf and Nature’ environmental concept was developed in co-operation with the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and the German Greenkeepers Association (GVD). 

The ‘DEHOGA Environmental Check’ for environmentally conscious and sustainable behaviour was designed for the special requirements of the hospitality industry and its predominantly small and medium-sized businesses. It closes the gap between the entry into corporate environmental commitment (e.g. energy campaign for the hotel and catering industry) and very demanding, sometimes cost-intensive environmental awards or environmental management systems (e.g. Eco Flower, EMAS, ISO 14001). The Castanea Resort Hotel has held the DEHOGA ‘silver’ environmental seal of approval since 2015

The Castanea Resort is supporting the NCL Foundation, which has been involved in the fight against the rare and fatal paediatric dementia NCL (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis) since 2002, with a charity tournament. The support is intended to create a platform for research into and dialogue about NCL in order to give the 700 or so NCL children in Germany and their families the prospect of therapies and cures that have so far been lacking.

The Castanea Resort Hotel is committed to promoting sustainable technologies and is increasingly focussing on e-mobility as a forward-looking solution for reducing CO₂ emissions. In June 2024, a modern charging infrastructure was put into operation on the hotel grounds by an external service provider. This comprises eight charging points with a charging capacity of 22 kWh each.

The charging infrastructure is managed by a professional service provider who guarantees both technical support and future-proofing. This ensures that the charging facilities are always state of the art and can be used reliably.

The implementation of this charging infrastructure emphasises Castanea Resort's commitment to more environmentally friendly mobility and demonstrates its clear focus on a sustainable future. E-mobility is seen as a key technology that helps to reduce the environmental footprint while offering a modern and sustainable solution to the challenges of mobility.

The non-profit Rainer Adank Foundation was established in 2000. The foundation's mission is to promote science, research and vocational training by providing full or partial funding for scientific or research projects at Leuphana University Lüneburg and the University of Applied Sciences North-East Lower Saxony.

Youth work is particularly important to us at Castanea Resort. With the youth training programme and the ‘Tee-off School’ school project, we enable many young people, regardless of their background, to get into golf. We specifically introduce young talents to the game and teach them essential values such as fairness, honesty, reliability and discipline in addition to golf training.

The Castanea Association for the Promotion of Youth Golf and Nature was founded in April 2023.

The purpose of the association is to promote the sport of golf for children and young people to organise team and youth sports in the region and to promote nature conservation, particularly on the grounds of the Castanea Golf Resort in Adendorf. Many members of the golf resort support the association and projects are realised together.
